International Rivers Day was established in 1997 in Curitiba, Brazil, at the first international conference against the construction of large dams organized by environmentalists from 20 countries.
Since 1997, it has reminded us every year of the importance of rivers and water resources, drawing attention to the problems of rivers and the need to preserve these vital links of our planet.
The theme for 2025, “Our Rivers, Our Future,” calls us to think more than ever about the impact of our actions and to remember that the health of our rivers is directly linked to our well-being, and indeed, our very survival.
As citizens of the planet, each of us must contribute to the protection of rivers, because our actions or inaction today can change the future of our rivers and the entire environment.
