Conclusion of the Final Conference

The final conference of the project Community-based Conservation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Syunik Region” was held today-September 19. The title of the conference was “Nature Protection and Rural Development under Climate Change in Southern Armenia: Challenges and Measures”. The conference was organized by the branch of German Nature Protection Union (NABU) in RA and Eco Globe environmental NGO.

Representatives of local and international organizations were invited to the event. The results of the above-mentioned program and other programs aimed at adaptation to climate change were presented.

Narek Grigoryan, Head of the branch of German Nature Protection Union (NABU) in the Republic of Armenia, Katrin Buder-Pelz, Head of the Development Cooperation Department of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Armenia, and Nune Darbinyan, President of Eco Globe NGO, made speeches at the opening of the conference.

Welcoming the audience, Head of the branch of German Nature Protection Union (NABU) in the Republic of Armenia Narek Grigoryan noted that the Union has been operating in Armenia since 2001, actively implementing programs aimed at the study of biodiversity and development of the society. From the first days of its activity the Union has closely cooperated with a number of local and international organizations, as well as state structures. Concluding the speech N. Grigoryan introduced the guests and passed the speech to Katrin Buder-Pelz, Head of Cooperation and Development Department of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Armenia.

К. Buder-Pelz mentioned that it is necessary to preserve fauna in the South Caucasus and water resources are very important here. He also mentioned that for this purpose they cooperate with a number of organizations such as: NABU, CNF, WWF and others. Buder-Pelz highlighted the support for the promotion of reforms, emphasizing the role of the government in this matter.

The speech was continued by Nune Darbinyan, President of Eco-Globe NGO. She noted that the role of NABU is incomparable, and she is honored that the Union has chosen Armenia as a country.

Head of NABU branch in Armenia Narek Grigoryan, project employees Philip Ashikyan, Anna Hovhannisyan and Marine Arakelyan shared the project results, success stories and gained experience.

Representatives from CNF Armenia, GIZ Armenia, Austrian Development Agency, Shen, FAO, WWF Armenia and ATP Yerevan office gave successive speeches.

Residents of the project target villages, project beneficiaries, local NGOs, community officials also had the opportunity to connect to the conference online.

The conference was held within the framework of the project “Community-based Conservation and Adaptation to Climate Change in Syunik Region” and is funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Nature Protection Union (NABU).
