A state reserve is considered to be an area of scientific, educational, historical-cultural, economic value, where the protection and natural reproduction of ecosystems and their components are ensured.
In the Republic of Armenia, any activity that violates the stability of the ecosystems of the reserve or threatens the protection of ecosystems in need of special protection, representatives of the flora and fauna, objects of scientific or historical-cultural value is prohibited in the territory of the state reserve.
The tasks and features of the regime of each state reserve are defined by the charter of the given state reserve.
Currently, there are 27 protected areas in Armenia, the total area of which is 102,212.93 ha or 3.44% of the territory of the republic. They are:
