May 31 - International White Stork Day

Today the world celebrates the International White Stork Day, the symbol of NABU.

The white stork is not only a symbol of the organization, but also has a great significance in the Armenian folk consciousness, according to which storks are transformed people. The white stork acts as a patron who watches over people and prevents them from getting into trouble.

Today is a very important day to remember that white storks have become an indicator of environmental contamination in Armenia.

Since 2017, the first calls were received from the village of Hovtashen in Ararat region that white storks are being contaminated, i.e. their feathers are turning black.

In connection with these problems, the branch of German Nature Protection Union (NABU) in the Republic of Armenia launched White Stork Research and Conservation Program from 2020, which aims to study the contamination problem.

Let us also remind that this year is the year of the international census of white storks, which means that the census will be conducted throughout Armenia, and sampling, ringing and installation of satellite sensors will be carried out in parallel.
